WHY WAS GREAT WALL OF CHINA BUILT?
69
Recently the Great Wall of China came into news when it was chosen as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The dimensions and vastness of China Wall still amazes the architects. Astonishing but true, it is 2,400 Km long. Also it is 4.57 to 9.2 metres long and 9.75 metres thick. It is essentially built of stones and bricks. Construction of this marvel started in the year 221 B.C. and it took almost 15 years to complete this work. Can you imagine what was the need for constructing such a huge wall?
In the year 246 B.C. King Shih Huang Ti united different provinces of China to an empire. But, to the north of this empire lived barbaric Mongols and the king feared that they might attack his empire any time. To protect his empire form Mongols he ordered the construction of a huge wall. This resulted in a wall starting from Shahi Kuan in the bay of Pothai to Chaikuman in Kansu.
Important question which arises is that did the achieve his goal? Unfortunately -no, because the wall was broken at many places and the Mongols got an opportunity to attack China. The purpose of constructing the wall could never be fulfilled.
The great wall is of China is one of the very few man-made objects that is visible from the moon.
